San Pedro del Pinatar is a small town and municipality in the autonomous community and province of Murcia, south-eastern Spain. The municipality is situated at the northern end of Murcia’s Mediterranean coastline, the Costa Cálida, and borders with the province of Alicante. It has an area of almost 22 km².

The municipality is situated between the Mediterranean Sea coast and the Mar Menor, a coastal salt-water lagoon which is the largest in Europe.

The Mar Menor coast belongs to other three municipalities: San Javier, Los Alcázares and Cartagena.  The latter is not by the Mar Menor itself, but in the Mediterranean.  San Pedro del Pinatar occupies a small peninsula with 14 km of coastline between the two seas.  The terrain is a mostly low-lying littoral depression, with an average elevation of only 13 m above mean sea level.

The town is primarily a fishing port as well as a magnate for tourism; the town itself has excellent sports facilities including tennis and paddle.  You can hire a bike and enjoy the local scenery as you peddle lazily along the flat quiet roads and salt fields. Runners and walkers frequently enjoy the promenade and beaches for their chosen activity.

Open in 2012, the Pinatar Arena sports centre features a modern gym, padel courts, swimming pool, football pitches and is becoming increasingly more popular.  Water sports can be enjoyed at El Mojon, and at the sports harbour at Las Salinas.

The Mercadillo de Artesania “El Sal” is a periodic market (check with the tourist office when you are there as the days change according to season); an arts and craft (including musical instruments) market which takes place in Parque de los Reyes de España y Explanada de Lo Pagán.  The main San Pedro del Pinatar street market takes place every Monday morning.

Salt ponds have been worked in the area since the time of the Roman Empire.  A small port in the Mediterranean Sea exists, with activity based on the fishing and the transport of the salt; as well as a leisure port with a large number of berths. There is another marina in the Mar Menor next to the fish market and the fishermen’s wharf .

San Pedro del Pinatar is approximately 45 kilometres from Murcia and 85 kilometres from Alicante.

The International Airport Murcia San Javier is just 15 minutes drive.
