Chrono on Torrevieja

1320 - Under the reign of King Jaime I of Aragón the watchtower Torre de la Mata, then known as Turris de las Salinas de la Mata, was rebuilt. It was constructed over the ruins of another, probably of Roman origin, in the same period the Torre de Cabo Server or Cabo Cervera, popalarly known as Torre del Moro, was also rebuilt. These served as coastal watctowers against possible attacks by privateers of Berber pirates.
1482 - In order to reduce the salt content of the lagoon then called the Salinas of Orihuela (now of Torrevieja) the king of Aragón, Fernando el Católico, ordered the construction of a communication channel from the lagoon to the sea. This channel or irrigation ditch is know as the "Acequión".
1767 - In the Geographical Study of the Kingdom of Valencia by Antonio Cavanilles there is perhaps the first written record of Torrevieja's existense as an urban settlement. The document reads "Adjacent to the Cabo Cervera, looking south-west, there has formed a village called Torrevieja where 25 years ago (1767) there were three families and now there are 106 families, almost all occupied in variours tasks on the Salinas that we will now describe".
1776 - Thanks to the excellent quality of the salit in the lagoons of Orihuela (Torrevieja), it was loaded onto ships at the Torre-Viexa or Torrevieja, the nearest point to the Salinas with good conditions.
 
1789 - In this year the population topped to 500 inhabitants and it became necessary to build a hermitage. King Carlos IV authorised its construction and, as a subsidiary to the Parish of La Mata and with a vicarage of its own, it was consecrated on May 21 by the bishop of Orihuela, José Tormo.
1806 - Manuel Godoy, minister of King Carlos IV, ordered the construction of a customs office in Torrevieja to control the town's shipping movements. Work began on the construction of the Inmaculada Concepción Church after the Bishop of Orihuela ordered the parish to be moved to Torrevieja, leaving La Mata its vicarage.
1830 - Torrevieja's first town council was formed by decree sealed with the Royal Arms of His Majesty King Fernando VII. The first mayor of Torrevieja's history was José Galiana.  
1867 - The "Casino Numancia" was formed, going to become the Sociedad Cultural Casino de Torrevieja in 1882.
 
1882 - The railway line from Torrevieja to Albatera was inaugurated, with the act attended by the Head of the Government, Antonio Cánovas de Castillo.
1897 - State auditing was introduced in the Salinas of Torrevieja bringing, among other changes, the creation of six Civil Guard posts in the town.
 
1915 - Work began on the Levante breakwater, using hardcore from the Salanet quarry. The contract was rescinded in 1922. In 1924 a new contract was awarded, this time to a quarry from Santa Pola. The works were interrupted in 1936 and this first project was finally completed in 1940.
 
1920 - Inauguration of Torrevieja's first football ground. It was on wasteland next to a mosaics factory in what is now the Colonia San Esteban.
 
1931 - Because of its recent development in agriculture, industry and commerce, King Alfonso XIII conceded Torrevieja - by Royal Decree no. 571 - the title of Town.
1939 - From September 26 to December 9 the Torrevieja-born politician Joaquin Chapaprieta Torregrosa was president of the government of the Second Republic.
 
1953 - An order from the Tax Office was published in which areas of land belonging to the municipal districts of Almoradi, Guardamar del Segura, Rojales and Orihuela were added to the municipal district of Torrevieja.
 
1955 - Instigated by Juan Aparicio, the local weekly newspaper Vista-Alegre was launched, with José Maria López Dolz as editor. The first National Habaneras Competition was inaugurated.
 
1969 - Inauguration of the Real Club Náutico, with the attendande of the the Navy Minister, Pedro Nieto Antúnez.
 
1997 - Torrevieja Town Hall, presided by mayor Pedro Hernández Mateo signs the General Office of State Heritage, the title deed by which the municipal of Torrevieja took ownership of the historic Eras de la Sal.
 
1999 - Torrevieja is named head of the Judicial District no. 13 of Alicante Province. Its juridiction takes in the municipal districts of Guardamar del Segura, Rojales, Los Montesinos, Benijofar, San Miguel de Salinas and Torrevieja.

ORIHUELA.
During the Visigothic Era, it was the capital of a region that united the actual provinces of Alicante and Murcia. Actually the first town of the area of "la Vega Baja". The Orihuela Cathedral is a National artistic and historical monument. The School and the Church of Santo Domingo, ancient Univeristy. Diocesan Museum of the Religous Art. The House Museum of Miguel Hernandez. Visit its famous "Palmeral" (forest of palm trees).
MURCIA.
Capital of the Community of Murcia, Cathedral. Cultural Casino. Museum of Archaeology. Museum of Salzillo. Museum of the Ethnology of the Huerta (fertile irrigated area of Murcia and Valencia). Arabic and baroque monuments of importance.
ELCHE.
The actual location of the population comes from the transfer of the urbe romana Illici. Monuments: the Calahorra Tower, the Altamira Palace, the Town Hall, the Mercé Convent, the Santa Maria Basilica. Museums: Museum of Archaeology of Alcudia, Museum of Contemporary Art, Municipal Museum of Archaeology. The visit to the palm tree forest with 300.000 samples in a surface of 150.000 m2 is imperative.
ALICANTE.
Capital of the Province. Called Lucentum by the Romans. City built facing the sea. It is a great delight to stroll on the Esplanade and the port. The Saint Nicholas Cathedral, the Santa Maria Church, the Santa Barbara Castle, the Palace of the Deputation. The Museum of Archaeology with Iberian, Punic, Roman and Greek rests.
